On 2 May 2024, the Federal Ministry for the Environment presented a draft for a third law to amend the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act. Here are the key points at a glance:

  • Consumers should be able to return their old devices to retailers more frequently.
  • Information in retail stores should be improved, and return options should be expanded.
  • The obligation to take back disposable e-cigarettes should be extended to all sales points.
  • Protection against fire hazards caused by improperly disposed or damaged batteries should be increased.
  • Collection points in stores should be uniformly labelled.
  • The option to return an old device without making a new purchase should be extended to all devices with an edge length of up to 50 centimetres (previously 25 centimetres).
  • At recycling centres, old electrical devices should be placed in collection containers exclusively by trained personnel.
