The EU Commission is getting serious about harmonizing waste separation.
The Joint Research Center (JRC) recently published the technical draft for a uniform EU-wide labeling system. These new symbols are a central component of the upcoming EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) and will fundamentally change the design of packaging throughout Europe.
What is the purpose of the new labeling?
Until now, the EU has had a patchwork of national disposal instructions (e.g., Triman in France or country-specific symbols in Italy). The PPWR provides clarity here: in the future, a uniform set of colored pictograms will be found on both packaging and the corresponding waste containers.
The system is strongly based on the proven Scandinavian EUPICTO standard. The aim is to make it easier for consumers to separate waste by using identical imagery on products and bins.
Key deadlines for businesses
The transition schedule is essential for manufacturers and distributors:
- August 12, 2028: Expected deadline for the mandatory application of the new symbols (or 24 months after the adoption of the implementing acts).
- Replacement of old standards: On this date, the previous Decision 97/129/EC (current recycling codes) will be repealed.
- Transitional period until 2029: Existing stocks and old labels may probably still be sold until 2029 before a final ban on use comes into effect.
What does this mean for your packaging design?
Companies will have to completely revise their print templates and material labels in the medium term. In addition to correct material classification (e.g., plastic, paper, composites), specific color codes and icons must also be strictly adhered to in order to ensure EU compliance.
