Right to Repair: New Rules Effective July 31

Stricter rules for electronic devices have been in effect in Germany since July 31. The new “right to repair” is intended to extend the lifespan of products and reduce electronic waste.

Here’s what’s new

  • Manufacturer requirement: Manufacturers must offer repairs for many everyday devices at a reasonable price, even after the warranty has expired.
  • Warranty bonus: Anyone who has a defect repaired within the first two years (instead of replacing the device) receives an additional year of statutory warranty (3 years instead of 2).
  • Accessibility: Manufacturers are no longer allowed to intentionally make repairs more difficult through software locks or design flaws.

Affected devices:

  • Smartphones & tablets
  • Washing Machines & Dryers
  • Dishwashers & Refrigerators
  • Televisions & Electronic Displays
  • Servers & Data Storage Devices
  • Batteries for E-Bikes & E-Scooters

Long-Term obligation to supply replacement parts

Manufacturers must provide essential replacement parts for many years. The exact duration depends on the specific device:

  • Smartphones & Tablets: At least 7 years.
  • Washing Machines & Dryers: At least 10 years.

Important: The period does not begin on the date of your personal purchase. It begins the moment the model series is officially discontinued (end of production).

Free Access for All

Spare parts, repair manuals, and tools must not be reserved exclusively for manufacturers’ own repair shops. Manufacturers must also make these available to independent repair shops and consumers.

The new law is a cornerstone of the European circular economy. By removing barriers and providing financial incentives, it aims to conserve valuable resources and drastically reduce the millions of metric tons of preventable electronic waste generated each year.
