Bye-bye, mini shampoo: The end of an era in hotel bathrooms!

Who hasn’t packed the little bottles of shower gel from the hotel bathroom as a souvenir? That will soon be a thing of the past!

The new EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) is cleaning up bathrooms.

What can we expect?
From January 1, 2030, single-use packaging for cosmetic and hygiene products will be banned in the accommodation sector.
This applies to the classic “minis” we all know: shampoos, lotions, and even toothbrush sets or shaving accessories in small packages, provided they are intended for single use in hotels.

The roadmap to sustainability
Contrary to some rumors, there will be no abrupt ban on everything this year.
Instead, the EU is focusing on a smart, step-by-step plan:
⏳ By 2030: Many regulatory requirements are already in place today, with further tightening to follow gradually.

Many hotel chains are not waiting for the law to come into effect, but are already switching to high-quality dispenser systems. This not only saves enormous amounts of plastic waste, but often even looks more high-quality and luxurious than the plastic minis.

🍽️ Focus on catering: Single-use packaging for food and drinks consumed on site is considered avoidable and is therefore being addressed particularly early on.
But here, too, the bans are being implemented gradually and not overnight.

📦 No more “empty space” in shipping:
We’ve all seen it: a huge package for a tiny product.
That will be a thing of the past from 2030!
Shipping cartons will then be allowed to contain a maximum of 50% empty space.

The main objectives of the regulation:
Waste prevention: Per capita waste generation is to be significantly reduced by 2030.

Circular economy: Packaging must be more reusable and recyclable in the future.
Harmonization: Uniform EU rules will replace national special measures and remove barriers to trade.
Climate protection: Less packaging waste means lower CO₂ emissions and conserves our resources.
