More than one in four people dispose of devices improperly

Whether it’s mini fans, adapters, wireless earbuds, or electronic toys: Low-cost small appliances (“Fast Tech”) are booming.
A recent study by the global umbrella organization WEEE Forum, conducted by Bellegarde Scientific Consulting among more than 10,000 adults in twelve countries, now reveals just how alarming the disposal habits surrounding these everyday gadgets really are.

An overview of the study’s key findings:

• Incorrect disposal methods: 27% of buyers dispose of end-of-life small appliances exclusively through household trash, plastic waste, or public trash cans. Only just under a third consistently use official recycling channels.

• Hoarding at home: When it comes to disposal methods (multiple answers allowed), keeping items at home tops the list at 29%.

• Short life cycle: 58% of buyers reported having used a device for no more than six months after purchase. Nearly two-thirds do not intend to reduce their consumption in this area in the future.

The risk at disposal facilities is real

If e-waste ends up in household trash, there is an acute danger: The devices are crushed in collection vehicles and sorting facilities. The batteries and lithium-ion batteries they contain can trigger devastating fires.
In a separate survey, 36% of waste electronics disposal companies reported at least one battery-related fire at their facilities in the previous year.

Call for Stricter Producer Responsibility (EPR)

Industry associations are sending a clear message to the market:
Anything with a plug, cable, circuit board, or battery is considered waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) at the end of its useful life—regardless of the product’s size or price

At the same time, the associations are calling for strict enforcement of marketplace liability in online commerce. Unregistered free-riders systematically evade disposal fees.
The result: Companies operating in compliance with the law are forced to shoulder the financial burden of the collection systems through no fault of their own. Here, the waste management and take-back alliances are finally calling for fair and comprehensive inspections.
