Large appliances over 50 cm

WEEE Category 4 covers electrical and electronic equipment where at least one external dimension exceeds 50 cm. A prerequisite is that the equipment is not already classified in a more specific category due to its particular characteristics.

Size alone is therefore not always sufficient for categorization. The WEEE classification must also take into account the function and characteristics of the product.

Which devices fall under WEEE Category 4?

Typical examples include:

  • large household appliances
  • larger power tools
  • large sports and recreational equipment
  • larger medical devices
  • certain monitoring and control instruments
  • larger electrical and electronic equipment for commercial use

Photovoltaic modules intended for use in private households are also generally classified under Category 4.

The 50-cm Threshold for Large Appliances

The largest external dimension of the electrical appliance is decisive for classification. If at least one external dimension exceeds 50 cm, the product can be classified as a large appliance, provided that no other, more specific category takes precedence.

The 50-cm threshold is particularly relevant for appliances that would otherwise generally be considered small appliances.

WEEE Registration for Large Appliances

Manufacturers and importers of large appliances must comply with the requirements of the ElektroG. For products subject to registration, this includes, in particular, correct classification into the appropriate WEEE category and registration with the ear Foundation prior to placing the product on the market.

Depending on the manufacturer’s role and distribution model, additional obligations may apply. These include, for example, ensuring the financing of end-of-life equipment disposal, take-back obligations, and compliance with labeling requirements.

Not sure how to classify your electrical device under the WEEE Directive?

ECOPV-EU assists manufacturers and importers in correctly classifying their electrical and electronic equipment, as well as with WEEE registration and the fulfillment of their legal obligations as manufacturers.
