Instructions for the proper filling of collection containers – ECOPV-EU GmbH

 1. General information

These filling instructions are intended to ensure the safe and legally compliant collection of used device batteries. They are aimed at all voluntary collection points that make used batteries available for collection via OfH ECOPV. The specifications take into account the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 (EU BattVO), the BattDG, the ADR dangerous goods regulations, and other technical rules. Proper filling of the containers is a prerequisite for safe collection, transport, and proper recycling.

2. Permitted battery types

Only waste batteries from devices in accordance with Art. 3 No. 1 EU-BattVO may be placed in the designated collection containers.

Vehicle batteries, industrial batteries, starter batteries, traction batteries, and damaged or critically defective batteries are not permitted.

3. Collection containers to be provided

OfH ECOPV provides or accepts the following container types:

– Transport drums (e.g., 30 L/60 L)

– Collection boxes for mixed device batteries

– Paloxes / collection boxes

– Roll containers (MGB)

– Mesh boxes

All containers must be intact, closed, and freely accessible.

4. Requirements for filling

4.1 Used device batteries (mixed fraction):

– Fill loosely, no plastic bags or foil

– Do not include any foreign materials

– Do not overfill boxes/barrels

 

4.2 Lithium-containing device batteries (< 500 g):

– Insulate terminals if possible

– No externally damaged or degassing cells

 

4.3 Lithium batteries > 500 g or mono-charges:

– Always tape terminals

– Fill only into marked drums

– Use non-conductive separating material (e.g., sand)

– Photo documentation mandatory

 

4.4 Critically defective lithium batteries:

– Do not place in standard containers

– Separate coordination with ECOPV required

5. Minimum quantities & provision

Transport drums: at least 3 drums for regular collection.

Additional containers will be collected according to actual fill level.

All containers must be ready for loading, freely accessible, and available during opening hours.

6. Safety and storage

Containers and batteries must be stored in a dry and well-ventilated place. Do not store near heat sources. Keep away from flammable materials. A suitable fire extinguisher must be available.

7. Documentation requirements for collection points

The following information must be provided for each collection:

– Contact details for the collection point

– Opening hours

– Number and type of containers provided

– Estimated proportion of lithium batteries

– Images of single-charge batteries or large lithium batteries

8. Consequences of incorrect filling

Incorrect filling can result in:

– Additional sorting costs

– Empty runs or additional appointments

– Refusal of collection

– Special disposal subject to a fee

The costs incurred shall be borne by the collection point or the client.
