The PPWR is coming: Here’s what will change for packaging starting in 2026!

Here is a quick overview of the official timeline:

  • August 2026: Mandatory EU declaration of conformity, strict PFAS ban, and new heavy metal limits.
  • 2027: Mandatory EPR registration for each EU destination country and requirement for foreign companies to appoint local authorized representatives.
  • 2028: Introduction of EU-wide standardized sorting labels and harmonized pictograms for material identification.
  • 2030: Stricter recycling requirements (Class C), minimum recycled content requirements for plastics, and a strict ban on empty space (max. 50%).
  • 2038 / 2040: Further tightening of recyclability requirements to Class B, as well as drastically increased recycled content quotas of up to 65%.
