Do you sell on Amazon, eBay, or other marketplaces and assume that your packaging licensing is all taken care of?
The new rules of the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) have been in effect since August 12, 2026. Under Article 45 of the PPWR, platforms are legally required to verify EPR registration and a self-declaration from retailers. In Germany, this marketplace verification (LUCID) has been in place since 2022—but what’s new is that these checks are now mandatory across the EU and have been drastically tightened.
👉 The most common pitfall: Many merchants blindly rely on the EPR services provided by Amazon or eBay. These automated services typically cover only packaging sold directly through these platforms. As soon as you operate your own online store or use multichannel shipping, a dangerous liability gap arises.
You must close these gaps yourself. You must take responsibility for registering your additional sales channels. If you ship from Germany to end customers in other EU countries and do not operate your own branch there, the PPWR requires you to appoint an Authorized Representative in the respective destination country who will assume your EPR obligations there.
