Sustainable mobility in Vaasa is the focus of a report from the Directorate-General for Environment dated 23 September 2026. As part of its European Green Leaf Year 2026, the Finnish city is implementing measures to make everyday journeys more environmentally friendly and increase participation.

Sustainable mobility in Vaasa: support for everyday cycling

Free-to-use bicycle maintenance stands have been installed at various locations. They allow repairs and adjustments on the go and respond to residents’ requests. Through this initiative, the city aims to encourage cycling, reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

New shared e-bikes are also available to city administration employees. These are intended to ease the last leg of their journeys and simplify commuting.

Less noise and more say

Vaasa has introduced two battery-powered lawnmowers. According to the report, they reduce pollutant and noise emissions.

At a workshop on 2 September, participants gathered ideas for improving walking routes, cycling and other forms of environmentally friendly mobility. During its European Green Leaf Year, the city is also using inclusive budgeting to fund measures that advance environmental sustainability and improve residents’ quality of life.
