Screens, Monitors, and Devices with Large Displays
WEEE Category 2 covers electrical and electronic equipment whose primary function is to display images or information on an electronic screen. In addition to function, the size of the screen area also plays an important role in classification.
Devices in this category must be properly recorded as part of WEEE compliance and assigned to the appropriate category by the ear Foundation.
Which devices fall under WEEE Category 2?
Typical examples include:
- Televisions
- Computer monitors
- Professional monitors
- Electronic displays
- Certain information and display systems
- Other devices whose primary function is to display images or information
A key characteristic of this category is a screen area of more than 100 cm², provided the device meets the other requirements of the category.
Distinction from Other WEEE Categories
Classification into Category 2 should not be based solely on the presence of a display. The primary function of the device is the decisive factor. For example, a small electrical device with an integrated display may be classified in a different WEEE category if the display of information is not the product’s primary function.
A thorough review is therefore particularly necessary for modern products with touchscreens, digital displays, or integrated displays.
WEEE Registration for Screens and Monitors
Anyone who places screens, monitors, or similar electrical devices on the market in Germany must comply with the requirements of the ElektroG. This includes, in particular, proper registration with the ear Foundation prior to placing the product on the market, provided the product falls under the scope of the ElektroG.
In addition, depending on the product and the manufacturer’s role, there are further obligations, such as those regarding take-back, financing of disposal, and labeling.
