Small appliances up to 50 cm

WEEE Category 5 covers electrical and electronic equipment with a maximum external dimension of 50 cm that is not already classified under another, more specific WEEE category.

This category is particularly broad and includes a large number of small electrical appliances from the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Which devices fall under WEEE Category 5?

Typical examples include:

  • small household appliances
  • electric toys
  • small power tools
  • small sports and leisure equipment
  • electronic measuring and control devices
  • small electrical equipment for commercial and industrial use
  • other electrical equipment with a maximum external dimension of 50 cm

Small photovoltaic modules for use in private households may also generally fall under Category 5.

Distinction from Other WEEE Categories

Not every electrical device with a maximum size of 50 cm automatically belongs to Category 5. First, it must be determined whether the product should be assigned to a more specific category based on its characteristics.

For example, small devices with a specific IT or telecommunications function may fall under WEEE Category 6. Lamps, monitors, and heat exchangers are also assigned to the appropriate categories regardless of their size.

WEEE Registration for Small Appliances

Anyone placing small appliances on the market in Germany must verify whether the product in question falls under the ElektroG and must be registered accordingly with the ear Foundation.

For manufacturers and importers, this means that the correct WEEE category must be determined before the product is placed on the market. Subsequently, other statutory obligations for manufacturers – such as those regarding labeling, take-back, and disposal – must be fulfilled.

Category 5 is therefore an important catch-all category for many small electrical appliances – but only if no more specific WEEE category applies.

Not sure how to classify your electrical device under the WEEE Directive?

ECOPV-EU assists manufacturers and importers in correctly classifying their electrical and electronic equipment, as well as with WEEE registration and the fulfillment of their legal obligations as manufacturers.
