The use of disposable e-cigarettes is booming – and with it, a massive safety risk. Because the built-in lithium-ion batteries can explode in general waste due to pressure or heat, they cause daily fires in garbage trucks and sorting facilities across Germany.
The Main Problem
- Mechanical stress: Waste is compressed under immense pressure in garbage trucks and sorting facilities.
- Reaction: The pressure damages the casings; an internal short circuit in the lithium-ion battery leads to “thermal runaway” (explosive ignition).
- Chain reaction: A burning vape battery immediately ignites the surrounding waste (paper, plastic), leading to uncontrollable large-scale fires.
- Extinguishing challenges: Lithium fires are difficult to extinguish with conventional methods and often reignite repeatedly.
- Disposal error rate: An estimated 80% of disposable vapes currently end up in household trash instead of electronic waste recycling.
Fire Incidents
Danger to People and the Environment
- Hazardous Substances: In the event of fires or careless disposal in the natural environment, toxic substances, heavy metals, and nicotine residues are released.
- Loss of Resources: Vapes contain valuable raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and copper. If they end up in household waste, they are incinerated and are irretrievably lost to the recycling cycle.
- Workplace safety: Sudden deflagrations and fires pose an immediate danger to waste management workers. Additionally, battery fires produce highly toxic gases.
How to Dispose of Them Properly
- Retailers: Large supermarkets, drugstores, and electronics stores accept used vapes for free. Look for the collection boxes near the entrance or exit.
- Expanded requirement effective July 1, 2026: Starting on this date, all retail outlets (including small kiosks, gas stations, and tobacco shops) must accept single-use e-cigarettes for free.
- Recycling centers: Municipal collection points accept vapes as small electrical appliances at any time. This is the safest way to recycle the raw materials.
Conclusion: Do not put vapes in household trash!
Disposing of single-use vapes incorrectly endangers lives and wastes valuable raw materials. Only returning them to a retailer or recycling center is safe and protects the environment.
