Heat Exchangers
WEEE Category 1 covers electrical and electronic equipment that transfers heat using an integrated circuit and employs substances other than water. These include, for example, gases, oils, or refrigerants. These substances are used to cool, heat, or dehumidify equipment.
Correct classification under the “Heat Exchangers” category is of great importance to manufacturers, importers, and other obligated companies. Among other things, this classification determines how an electrical appliance is to be handled as part of the WEEE registration process with the ear Foundation.
Which devices fall under WEEE Category 1?
Typical examples of heat exchangers include:
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Refrigeration and deep-freeze units
- Air conditioning systems and units
- Heat pumps
- Dehumidifiers
- Certain commercial refrigeration systems
- Other electrical appliances with an integrated heat transfer circuit
The size of the device alone is not the deciding factor. Even small electrical appliances may fall under Category 1 if they meet the legal requirements for a heat exchanger.
Why is correct WEEE categorization important?
Electrical and electronic equipment must always be correctly classified before being placed on the market in Germany and – if it falls within the scope of the ElektroG – registered with the ear Foundation. Incorrect classification of a device can lead to erroneous registration and, consequently, compliance risks.
Manufacturers and importers of heat exchangers are also subject to specific requirements regarding the disposal and recycling of end-of-life equipment. For devices containing refrigerants or other relevant substances, environmentally sound handling and proper disposal are of particular importance.
