The European Commission launched a public consultation on bio-based plastic packaging on 21 October 2026. Comments can be submitted until 13 January 2027. The Commission announcement published on the launch date confirms both dates.
Bio-based plastic packaging: What is being assessed
The consultation forms part of the review under Article 8 of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). It examines technological development and environmental performance, as well as possible measures to stimulate demand and possible targets for bio-based feedstocks. Sustainability requirements could also be considered. Who can participate
The consultation is open to all interested parties, including citizens, public authorities, environmental organisations, research institutions and businesses across the packaging value chain.
Businesses can contribute practical experience and evidence on feedstock availability, performance, environmental impacts, sustainable sourcing and suitable recycling technologies. Those wishing to participate can find further consultation links in the Commission announcement.
